1985 - New heating & cooling system were installed in the clubhouse as well as new carpeting and a new bar. A new entrance to the bar, a new deck, old wiring replaced, and new siding were also part of the remodeling process. New windows were also put in the rest of the clubhouse with the total cost of remodeling a little over $100,000. The Country Club had a contest to name the clubhouse. Dave Goff was the winner ... the name was "Watersedge"
1986 - Sold old club manager's house to the Bob Tapper family. This provided monies to build a new maintenance building which was constructed in the fall and winter.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency informed Bracken Holdings that Lake Bracken had pollutants in it. This was caused by the Copper Ty plant and the Knox County landfill. We are still negotiating the problem with I.E.P.A. in 1997.
1987 - On January 6 our clubhouse: was destroyed by fire. The following is Phoebe's recollection of that day. "On Tuesday, January 6 at 7:00 a.m., Larry was at the golf shop when he received a phone call from Tim Patterson at the maintenance shop saying that the clubhouse was on fire. I told him to dial 911 to report the fire since he was closer, and that I would meet him there. We proceeded to shut the electricity and gas off. By this time the fire trucks had arrived and were trying to put the fire out. A lot of members started showing up and couldn't believe it was happening. We all stood there watching her burn and all the memories came back. We still can't believe it happened. A part of us is missing for Larry and me. She was a landmark and she will be missed." The last restaurant manager was Betty O'Connor
For Larry Hovind a "lifetime wish" was finally accomplished ... a new water system was installed by 152 members volunteering their help. This was started in September and finished in October. A special thanks to all for a job well done. Late in the summer construction on the new clubhouse began.
1988 - The new clubhouse was finished and the old golf shop was torn down in April. On July 10 an open house was held and Ben Davidson (a professional football player) attended the event. Martha King is the new restaurant manager. The existing practice green was started in August.
1989 - T.V. cable was installed at Lake Bracken. Landscaping was done around new clubhouse.
1990 - A fishing tournament was held August 26th The significance being we were finally over the scare of the pollutants from 1986. It was enjoyed by all who attended.
1992 - The club house held a '50's & 60's dance with entertainment provided by "Elvis". He did a one hour show and played music for the rest of the evening. It proved to be a very successful evening with standing room only.
Jeff Reed reported that the swim team was growing rapidly. Membership has grown from 18 swimmers in 1991 tc 33 in 1992. The swimmers have picked a team name of "Blue Waves".
1992 - The club spent $2,500 to rent equipment to move and transplant trees on the golf course. The trees were donated by Percy Alexander.
1993 - A bridge was constructed on the dike at #11 so the lake water could flow back and forth from the pond to the lake for algae problems.
New shelter was built at the pool. It has been used for cookouts on all summer holidays. It's a great way to have lunch at the pool and a break from the sun.
Dredging started at the Swinging Bridge Cove.
An Amoco pipe line that crossed the old landfill road was accidentally hit by a road grader. Environmental agencies removed about 75,000 gallons of crude oil from the mouth of Lake Bracken.
Lake Bracken hosted "Lake Bracken Relays" involving over 150 area swimmers. The pool began a 5 year program to purchase furniture for the new pool deck and the Blue Waves swim team had its first winning season beating both Galesburg area swim teams.
The road project was completed in two stages with work being done by Gunther Construction and Johnson Blacktopping at a cost of $97,394.
